A single night in this quintessentially English city

Salisbury is a beautiful English market town set in the depths of the Wiltshire countryside and a good base for exploring the area. For a city break Salisbury has plenty of places to visit within an hours drive or you can just enjoy the medieval streets and the cathedral. Just don’t use a Russian accent when you visit!
Longleat
Taking advantage of our HHA membership we popped down to visit Longleat before arriving in Salisbury. We saved nearly £40 on this one visit so that was a bargain although if I had paid £40 to go in then I would have been very disappointed.
There was a food festival going on so they had the usual stalls, fun fair and live music which was all lovely. They also had some old British cars and bikes displayed, some of which evoked a little whiff of nostalgia!
The house was pretty but I was surprised at the total lack of formal gardens and walks in the grounds – it was very much a come to the adventure park/safari park/house and then go home type of place. Ah well, it was free and we had a nice lunch before heading on to Salisbury.
Salisbury Cathedral
Although I’ve been to Salisbury plenty of times it was nice to not have an agenda. We stayed at the Mercure which is near the cathedral so it was convenient to get sunset shots and also 5AM bloody sunrise shots too!
The cathedral close was absolutely beautiful, like it was stuck in an 18th century time warp. The cathedral itself was pretty impressive too – especially the Chapter House with the Magna Carta!

I woke early and walked down to the water meadows to get some sunrise views of the cathedral before heading back to the hotel. Another wander after breakfast finished our trip and we then headed to our next stop, on the way home – a garden for Debbie!
Heale Gardens
Heale Gardens is an HHA freebie that we wouldn’t even have known existed otherwise! It was a bit off the beaten track but what a beautiful garden! Lots of different areas, each very different but integrating nicely into the whole and with a nice cafe too – very important! I’m still getting used to the new camera but a very pretty place and well worth a visit – Debbie could have spent all day there!
Although we could have done all this as a day trip it was nice to have the extra time that a Salisbury city break gave us to just meander around the places we visited. Staying overnight also meant I could catch the sunrise which is always my favourite time of day.
