Even the phrase ‘road trips’ is incredibly evocative. I guess it’s more of an American thing as they have the space and roads to travel long distances through a huge mix of scenery, all without leaving their home country.
The UK does have some great options and I have been on some very enjoyable road trips but they usually require quite a few hours of tedious driving before you get to the quieter and more scenic roads.
Although British hotels are generally expensive, the fact you don’t need to hire a car or fly anywhere can make this a budget option. There is obviously the great British unknown – the weather – to consider though …..
Europe has some lovely roads and routes and flights are so cheap it’s easy to spend a few days or weeks travelling and exploring. The road networks are generally good although the multitude of regulations mean it’s worth doing research beforehand.
I did have a scare when on a road trip from Bulgaria to Romania where I hadn’t bought a tax disc I wasn’t even aware of and the customs post wanted to fine me €300 for this €4 disk. Luckily after some negotiation we settled on €5 to buy a cappuccino!
