This was a break with the kids, the location chosen based purely on budget. I had Hilton points so the hotel was free and flights were below £50 return so it was a bit of a bargain break in Luxembourg! It was also a city I’d read about but never visited.
Our Accomodation
We opted for the hotel arranging our transfer from the airport which made things easier. The Doubletree hotel was set in lovely grounds on the edge of woodland so our first evening was spent just exploring.
The next day we took the bus into the city centre and started walking around. The place is incredibly compact – less than 10 minutes to walk from one edge of the old city to the other. There are no real ‘must see‘ sights but the views from the escarpments are very impressive and there are an abundance of parks that were created after most of the fortress was demolished.

It was hard work walking up and down the hillsides but the views almost made it worth it. The climb from the river to the modern art museum and fortress museum was a particular delight – compounded by the fact that nowhere seems to have cafes! I guess we just expect that each attraction will have a coffee shop after visiting so many National Trust and English Heritage places!
The second day was pretty much more of the same other than missing the last bus home, being unable to find a taxi and having to walk back. The city is incredibly quiet – other than the main square there were very few people around and a definite lack of cafes outside the main areas!
It always feel strange that European cities seem to compress everything into a few hours of time – early mornings are dead and late evenings are dead but everything happens inbetween.
If we’d had a car with us then there is lots to see in the immediate area but it was nice to just chill a bit, use the pool and gym and have time together. The city could be done in a day so it is ideal for a weekend break without the pressure of ‘having’ to see certain sights.
