Why Tunisia
Tunisian winter sun is a fantastic respite from the rain of the UK. Sightseeing, beaches, history, sunshine and travel photography is a great tonic!
The language is mostly French so it’s easy enough to make yourself understood. I don’t really remember a huge amount about this holiday though. We did lots of trips and my wallet got stolen from the hotel room but that’s about it. Somewhere that is due a revisit I think.
Hammamet
This was the beach by our hotel, very quiet and lovely to be by the seaside again.
Carthage
“Carthago delenda est” as Cato the Elder said and they certainly did a good job. Punic Carthage has been totally destroyed and all that is left now is yet another Roman city. Pretty boring and tragic too.
Tunis and Bardot Museum
With the Carthage visit we also stopped at the Bardot Museum which was fascinating for me, less so for the kids! They did get their hands henna’d by a very nice lady in a nearby cafe though.
Sidi Bou Said
The final stop on this days tour was Sidi Bou Said, a very pretty little town with a couple of museums and cafes.
Friguia Animal Park
This park was another trip from the hotel and was actually rather good. The animals were in huge open areas with walkways over the top and even the evening ‘traditional dancing’ put on for the tourists wasn’t too bad.
Kairouan
I wish I had known more about Kairouan before we visited. It is a site of Islamic pilgrimage and allegedly a very pretty city. We weren’t allowed into the mosque as we were filthy infidels (imagine any of our cathedrals refusing entry to Muslims!) and a guy in a carpet shop let is go onto his roof terrace to have look while drinking tea. Very pleasant.
Chebika Mountain
Part of another hotel trip, Chebika was a lovely hilltop viewpoint. I think it was chosen as a way to break up the journey to Tozeur although the views were good.
Chott el Jerid
This was a very early morning stop (hence the sunrise!) and we were amazed how cold it was! Utterly calm though, beautiful and amazing the colours of the sun on the salt deposits.
Tozeur Oasis
A lovely stop where we watched an old guy climb the palm tree to fetch dates from the top. Amazing the little things you remember! The contrast between the palm fringed oasis and the barren Tunisian hills was also very evident.
Tamerza Waterfall
Another place that was a photo stop rather than a destination, this one is memorable for how chilled Sofia was when given a lizard to carry!
Matmata
The claim to fame of Matmata is the fact it was used as a filming location for the first Star Wars film, something it’s been milking ever since.
El Djem
Well, I have saved the best (for meat least) until last. El Djem is a fantastic Roman amphitheatre that rivals the Coliseum in Rome. It could seat 35,000 people and is pretty much entirely intact still. It also has the advantage of being a lot quieter than Rome.
Conclusion
Looking back on the photos we actually saw an amazing amount of the country for a resort based holiday. The mountain scenery of North Africa is fantastic and most of the people are very welcoming of Western tourists and their money.

The country is excellent value for money and certainly offers enough to visit more than once.

Some lovely photos, Marcus. I have been to some of those places. El Djem is amazing- I remember walking all around that. The girls look as if they are enjoying themselves 😊
It was a really nice break, I’d forgotten how many trips we did. The kids were pretty lucky, we have done a lot of travelling together 🙂
This information is priceless. Where can I find out more?
