Copenhagen is one of those European cities which is ideal for a weekend break being compact for walking around. It is easy to get to and a few days in Copenhagen is sufficient to see some impressive architecture and enjoy a great vibe. Sadly it’s also damned expensive for food and drink but I didn’t realise that until after we got there!
For our stay in Copenhagen we decided to stay at the airport hotel – mostly because I could use points to pay for it but also because Natalya said the metro was such a good way to get around.
The hotel was great, a superb room with views across to Sweden and the Oresund Bridge and we had a couple of ours nap whilst we waited for Zeynep’s later flight to arrive.
Nyhavn
The first day was pretty dismal weather so we just wandered around the centre. We stopped for lunch in Nyhavn which was my own fault – it was such a tourist trap prices for food were ridiculous. Chalk that one up to experience! It was a lovely area though and a very mellow introduction to the city.
Rosenborg Castle
From Nyhavn it was a short walk to Rosenborg Castle and we had a great time in the gardens there, enjoying some blue skies, before heading on to my favourite part of our visit.
Round Tower
For me, the highlight of the day was the Round Tower. The tower was impressive – no steps until the final climb to the roof, otherwise just a steady upwards spiral with stop offs for some excellent exhibitions.
Christiansborg
We continued to walk around the city and found a peaceful little park before continuing to the Christiansborg palace complex. Like the rest of the city this was well kept and incredibly quiet.
Copenhagen Harbour
On our second day we woke to glorious sunshine. After a huge breakfast we headed off to the docks and walked to the Little Mermaid statue. The harbour area was an excellent example of urban regeneration – lots of open community areas and very clean and tidy.
We watched a game of water something for a while then just followed the coastal walk. The Little Mermaid was a bit sad, personally I’d relocate her about 20m out into the harbour to stop people vandalising her. it would also be easier to get photos without hordes of people draped over her!
Kastellet
Kastellet is an excellently maintained star fort that is still in use by the Danish army but we were able to walk around the ramparts and take in the views before walking through a couple of large parks and then sitting down for a welcome Starbucks.
Tivoli Gardens
We came back to the hotel for a siesta (sunshine is very draining once you hit 50!) and then in the evening we went to the Tivoli Gardens.
These are beautifully maintained but a lot smaller than expected. The gardens were pretty and busy without being crowded, a good example of how to do an amusement park without the cheap tackiness so many of them seem to have. We didn’t stay for the light show as we hadn’t eaten a proper dinner yet so we had a nice Chinese in one of the squares before heading back.
Although we were only had a few days in Copenhagen we managed to cover a lot of sights. Fredriksourg Castle ,the National Museum, interior of Rosenborg Castle and the Design Museum were all left until next time. A very quiet city, pretty and clean and an ideal city break destination.
